Norris Sterner

Norris Sterner, 83, of Mexico died at 8:40 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at Golden Living Center/Pin Oaks in Mexico.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Pickering Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mr. Sterner was born on June 25, 1925, in Mexico, a son of James Elwood and Jessie Thistle (Harvey) Sterner. He was a graduate of Mexico High School. He served in the US Navy from June 1943 until March 1946 as a Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class. On Oct. 17, 1947, in Mexico, he married Jean M. March, who survives at the home.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Kay Sterner, Kansas City, and one grandson Scott Green, Portland, Ore.; and three great granddaughters.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a daughter Susan Sterner Hargrove; two sisters, his twin Narcissa Sterner Green and Mary Jane Geary; and two brothers, Joe Harvey Sterner and James E. Sterner Jr.

He worked as a clerk and rural carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Mexico for 32 years, retiring in August 1980. He was a member of the First Christian Church, I.O.O.F. #99, Past Post Commander of James Bledsoe Post #26 of the American Legion, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Memorials may be made to the Golden Living Center/Pin Oaks Residents’ Fund or Community Hospices of America. They may be sent in care of Pickering Funeral Home, 403 N. Western, Mexico, MO 65265.
