Arthur "Bud" Riley




Arthur A. Bud Riley, 83, of Mexico, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital in Columbia.


Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Pickering Funeral Home in Mexico. Visitation will be Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in the Auxvasse Cemetery.


Mr. Riley was born on July 4, 1924, in St. Charles, Mo., a son of Virgil William and Florence Jinny (Fox) Riley. On Dec. 23, 1951, in Auxvasse, he married Mary Helen Dunn, who died March 7, 1978. He married M. Harriett Bowen on Aug. 11, 1978 in Mexico. She survives at the home.


Bud was a World War II veteran, and served in the Navy. He served on two submarines, the Turpin and the Pueblo. Upon returning to Mexico he owned a sign business and a trucking company, and for 20 years was a Police Officer for the City of Mexico. He was then Audrain County Sherriff for two terms. He also did private security work for several years until he retired at age 77. He was a dedicated family man, and loved to fish and hunt, especially frogs.


In addition to his wife survivors include two daughters, Madeline Hassen and husband Sid, Union, and Melissa Zeigler, Mexico; a step-daughter, Karmen Bowen Glover, Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Don Riley and wife Dot, Fulton, and John Riley and wife Sue, Iberia; a sister Betty Kramer, St. Charles; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.


In addition to his first wife Mary Helen, he was preceded in death by a brother, Leland Riley and a sister, Maudie Albin.


The family suggests memorials be given to Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital in Columbia. They may be sent in care of Pickering Funeral Home, 403 N. Western, Mexico, MO 65265.
