Bettie Rose Davis

Mrs. Bettie Rose Towne Davis, 83, of Mexico, formerly of Hannibal, died Friday evening, Sept. 4, 2009, at King s Daughters Home in Mexico, where she has resided for the past 2 years.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday Sept 9, 2009, at Pickering Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Kukuk officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

Bettie was born in Mexico on June 12, 1926, a daughter of Jackson Junior Towne and Mignon McDonough Towne. She was married to William A. (Dub) Davis, on August 5, 1945. He died on Sept. 12, 2006.

Survivors include two sons, David A. Davis and wife Carol of Hannibal and Timothy Towne Davis and wife Mary Jo of Mexico; three grandchildren, Christopher Clark Davis of Allentown, PA, Laura Louise Davis of Columbia, and Steven Cecil Davis of Mexico, and one great granddaughter, Ciara Cheyanne Davis of Columbia; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as two sisters-in-law, Dora Bagley of Centralia and Mary Frances Bagley of Chenoa, IL.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jackson Garrison Towne and three sisters, Martha Willingham, Dorothy Sumpter and Lois Vanskike Johnson.

Bettie was a graduate of Mexico High School and a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of Order of Eastern Star, where she was Past Worthy Matron of Chapter 354 (Now Chapter 35 of Fulton). Bettie also belonged to several bridge clubs and was an avid card player. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and had recently knitted for the Prayer Shawl Ministry of First Christian Church, Hannibal.

Bettie, Dub and family moved from Mexico to Hannibal in 1955, and returned to Mexico in 1964, where she lived until her death. She was also interested in her family genealogy and enjoyed traveling with her husband. She was an excellent cook, and in her younger years, enjoyed fishing and gardening and more recently bird watching and watching deer in her back yard in town.
