Daphna Berrey

Daphna F. Berrey, 86, died on Sunday, June 4, 2006, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, Mo.

Mrs. Berrey was a longtime Mexico resident and had moved to Memphis two and a half years ago to be near her daughter.

Daphna was born on Sept. 30, 1919, in Mexico, a daughter of Robert M. and Hazel G. (Every) Smith. She was married in Mexico on Sept. 21, 1940, to Max C. Berrey, who preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 1994.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Mexico and had served as a Deacon, Deaconess, Elder and Elder Emeritus, Past President of the Christian Women s Fellowship, and Sunday school teacher. She was also active in the community serving as a Pink Lady (AMC Auxiliary), and volunteered at the Kings Daughters Home and the Missouri Veterans Home. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and was the first WWII Veterans bride to serve as President.

Daphna swam almost every morning at the YMCA until her health would not allow.

She is survived by one son, Dr. Ronald M. Berrey and his wife Joan, Lake St. Louis; two daughters, Beverly Cole and husband John, of Rutledge, and Debra Rossiter and husband Walter, Clayton, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Avis LaRue, Conway, Ark., 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Berrey, great granddaughter Star Watkins, son-in-law, Steve Seckman, and brother Robert Lee Smith.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Pickering Funeral Home with the Rev. Randall Sawyer officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park.
