John "J.J." Janssen, 61, of Mexico, died at 4:02 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Audrain Medical Center in Mexico. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Pickering Funeral Home in Mexico with the Rev. Rick Smith officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5 until 8 p.m. Mr. Janssen was born on Dec. 7, 1942 in Quincy, Ill., a son of Russell and Edna Mae (Tournear) Janssen. On Oct. 21, 1972, in Mexico he married Bonnie Owings who survives at the home. "J.J." was owner of the Mexico Singer Sewing Center. He was a member of the Mexico Elks Lodge, Mexico Moose Lodge, and the Mexico T.P.A. post. He served in the Army from 1960 until 1963, and was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter Johnda Darby and her husband John, Mexico; a step-daughter, Tami Miller, Mexico; a step-son, Robby Miller and his wife Cara, Mexico; two sisters, Darlene Verheyen and husband Richard, Springfield, Mo., and Evelyn Kuhn and husband Ralph, Fruita, Colo.; two grandchildren, Erika and Austin Miller, Mexico; mother-in-law, Evelyn Owings, Mexico; and a brother-in-law, Bill Owings and wife Sandy, Nashville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Bob Owings. The family suggests memorials be given to the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation or the American Heart Association, in care of Pickering Funeral Home, 403 N. Western, Mexico, MO 65265.
