George R. "Bob" Sullivan, Jr.



George R. Bob Sullivan, Jr., of Mexico, formerly of Moberly, died at 7:45 a.m., Sunday, June 25, 2006, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico.


Mr. Sullivan was born on Sept. 1, 1926, in Mexico, the only child of George R. and Elizabeth H. (Dermody) Sullivan. On Feb. 15, 1953 in Moberly he married Laura Gross Penick who survives.


Bob attended St Brendan School for 12 years, graduating from high school in 1944. After high school, he enlisted in the Army and served until 1946 as a parachute rigger. While in the service, he attended South Dakota State University and Washington University in St. Louis. After completing his service, he moved to Moberly and became a salesman for Moberly Produce. In 1963 he went into business for himself, opening Bob Sullivan Distributing Company, a wholesale fruit and vegetable company, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1988. Bob was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church in Moberly.


In addition to his wife Laura, who now resides in Brunswick, he is survived by a son, Robert Penick and wife Camilla, Shawnee, Kan.; two daughters, Kathy Groves and husband Jim, Mexico, and Louise Straub and husband Ralph, Brunswick; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.


A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at St. Brendan Catholic Church with Fr. John Schmitz officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 until 10:45 a.m. at Pickering Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Dewitt.


Memorials may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home Activities Fund. They may be sent in care of Pickering Funeral Home, 403 N. Western, Mexico, MO 65265.
