Harold E. "Gene" Zeigler, 77, of Mexico, died Wednesday evening, August 23, 2017, at Boone Hospital in Columbia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 28, 2017, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Mexico with Pastor Charles Legg officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 p.m at Pickering Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Mr. Zeigler was born April 1, 1940, in near Kirksville, the son of Harold G. and Bertha Mae (Burchett) Zeigler. On February 1, 1961, in Kirksville, he married Rebecca P. Head, who survives.

Gene was a Mexico High School graduate with the class of 1958. He also attended Truman University (NE Mo. State). He is a veteran having served for 6 years in the US Army National Guard.

Gene worked in Civil Engineering most of his life and spent time with the City of Mexico, Wetterau, Prudential and Federated Life Insurance, The National Chamber of Commerce, and Harbison Walker. He was injured in October of 1981 and was forced to retire.

He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Mexico and had served the church in many capacities. He was also very involved in parent organizations with the schools and he volunteered for several community organizations. He was very interested in keeping up with current events and he enjoyed reading automotive and scientific magazines, and he loved gardening.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, John M. Zeigler and wife Nicole Sue of Cincinnati, OH, and Mark A. Zeigler and wife Kathie Irene of Dallas, TX; four brothers, Roy Zeigler and wife Geneva, St. Charles, Carl Zeigler and wife Donna, Mexico, Paul Zeigler of Mexico and Gary Zeigler and wife Deborah, of Columbia; two sisters, Darlene Wright, Overland Park, KS, and Marla Bennett, Mexico; six grandchildren, Joshua M., Luke B., Daniel T., Sara M., Jonah A., and Matthew B. Zeigler; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Taylor and Dorothy Zeigler.
