Herbert D. Painter, 66, New Bloomfield, died Oct. 11, 2004, at his home. Mr. Painter was born on Nov. 6, 1937, in Perry, a son of Herbert Drake and Wanda Marie Ledford Painter. On Dec. 7, 1955, in Mexico, he married Billie JoAnn Harper, who survives at the home. Mr. Painter served in the U.S. Army for 23 years, during both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star. He retired from the military in 1977, and then worked at Missouri Military Academy for a short time before going to work at the Missouri Department of Social Services and the Department of Health in Jefferson City, where he retired in 1998. He was a member of the Callaway Community Christian Church in Fulton. In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Robert Kent Painter, Holts Summit, and Rickie Dean Painter, Laddonia; two daughters, Brenda Kay Hays, Holts Summit, and Shara Dawn Shiverdecker, New Bloomfield; two grandchildren who were raised in the home, Sara Ann Painter, Jefferson City, and Ricky Dean Painter, Jr., of the home; one sister, LaWanda Dean Reagles, Pine Top, Arizona; 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild. One brother, Robert Painter, and two sisters, Betty O'Brian and Lois Alameda, preceded him in death. Funeral services for Mr. Painter will be held on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m. at Pickering Funeral Home with the Rev. Eldon Wilson officiating. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
