Jean Carter McIntosh

Jean Carter McIntosh, 88, of Mexico, Missouri died at 2:35 p.m. Sunday, August 3, 2014. She was the daughter of Charles Norman and Edith Carrigan Carter of Centralia, Illinois. She is survived by her daughters, Bonnie McAllister of Atlanta, Georgia., Sara Wooten (Jim) of Mexico, Missouri and Elizabeth Trusty of Dallas, Texas as well as five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Jean was born and educated in Centralia, Illinois. It was there that she earned her private pilot's license at the age of 18. On February 9, 1945, she married Robert McIntosh, who preceded her in death on March 17, 2013. While he earned his bachelor's degree at Westminster College, Jean worked in the promotional office and was responsible for issuing press passes when Winston Churchill visited Westminster in 1946 and delivered his Iron Curtain speech. Following Bob's graduation, they moved to Washington, D.C. and Jean was employed in the office of Senator John Sherman Cooper of Kentucky while Bob earned his master's degree.

Jean taught piano for 35 years in Mexico, leading countless students to achieve perfect scores in major competitions. Several of her students were inspired to continue their education in piano performance in college. She continued to teach piano while living at the Pin Oaks Nursing Center.

Her hobbies included studying wine making and production in major wine producing regions in Europe and California. She also loved to cook and entertain and she served as a recipe tester for the Betty Crocker company for many years.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the Confederacy and was a leader of a Children of the Revolution group in Macon, Georgia.

She served on the Executive Board of the Friends of Music, University of Missouri, and also on the Board of the Winston Churchill Memorial Library in Fulton, Missouri.

She was instrumental in the planning and building of the Mexico Animal Shelter.

She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mexico, serving as a Deacon and an Elder as well as on many church committees. She was also a long time Head Start volunteer at the church.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 9th, at First Presbyterian Church of Mexico. The family will receive visitors at a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Audrain Humane Society or First Presbyterian Church of Mexico.
