Lucy Atkinson

Lucy Hopper Atkinson, 93, of Mexico, died at 12:35 p.m., Friday, January 18, 2008, at Golden Living Center/Gamma Road in Wellsville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2008, at Pickering Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Ostrom officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 am until service time. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Atkinson was born on Nov. 23, 1914, in Mineola, the daughter of Sam and Pansy Cunningham Hopper. She attended high school in Columbia and Mexico. On Aug. 3, 1933, in Mexico, she married J. Frank Atkinson, who died on July 27, 2000.

She received Laboratory Technician Certification from Jewish Hospital in 1942, and worked as a lab technician for Drs. Brashear and Garcia in Mexico. She also served as a technician in the American National Red Cross blood bank for many years; served on the board of directors for the American National Red Cross for Montgomery and Audrain Counties; and personally donated 9 gallons of blood to the Red Cross. When her children were in school she was also active in PTA and Band Parents.

She had been a member of First Baptist Church in Mexico since 1939, serving as Youth Director, WMU president, trustee, director of G.A. s, on the pastor search committee, and taught Sunday school for 50 years.

Lucy enjoyed being outdoors. She and Frank worked on their farm together, growing vegetable and flower gardens, mowing pastures, cutting and burning brush, and fishing.

Survivors include one son, James Frank Atkinson Jr. and wife Barbara, Mexico; two daughters, Ruth Ann Bybee and husband Gale, Mexico, and Elizabeth Washer and husband Tony, Mexico; seven grandchildren, Marlene McGlensey and husband Kevin, James Frank Atkinson III and wife Kathy, Laura Wright and husband Rodney, Joe Atkinson and wife Dorrie, Loran Bringham and husband Dave, John A Washer and wife Kristina, and Sarah Beardslee and husband Chad; and three great grandchildren, Rebecca and Melissa McGlensey, and Airen Atkinson.
