Mildred L. Johnston



Mildred Louise Johnston, 92, of Mexico, died at 3:35 a.m. today, Jan. 29, 2007, in Wellsville.


Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Pickering Funeral Home with the Revs. Jerry Ostrom and Chris Atkinson officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from noon until the service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park.


Mrs. Johnston was born on Sept. 18, 1914, in Shelbina, a daughter of William Jefferson and Maudie Mae (Zaner) Peters. She was a 1932 graduate of Shelbina High School and was salutatorian of her class. She worked for 33 years for International Shoe Company in the heel department. On Sept. 23, 1933, in Madison, she married John A. Johnston, who died April 29, 1981, in Mexico.


Mrs. Johnston was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, secretary of the United Shoe Workers of America union, and Centennial Baptist Church where she was active in Oasis. She was an avid MU Tiger basketball and Cardinals baseball fan and was very knowledgeable about the teams and players.


Survivors include a son, Larry Allen Johnston, Wellsville; a daughter, Shirley Willingham and husband Robert, Laddonia; three grandchildren, Rodney Willingham and wife Carol, Martinsburg, Gary Willingham and wife Juanita, Mexico, and Dedra Heath and husband Roger, Mexico; 9 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.


One brother, Bernard Peters, and one sister, Dorothy Sherwood, preceded her in death.
