Raymond J. Powell

Raymond J. Powell, 97, a long time Mexico resident, died at 7:00 a.m., Thursday, October 30, 2014, at Missouri Veteran's Home. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Pickering Funeral Home with Rev. Don Deeker officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m./Noon until time of service. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Vandalia Cemetery.

Raymond was born February 4, 1917, in Mineola, Mo., a son of Thomas Jefferson and Rosa Viola (Winter) Powell.

On November 12, 1971, in Mexico, he married Vera V. Kristofferson Franke, who preceded him in death on January 5, 2004.

Mr. Powell was a veteran of the US Army serving in World War II. He was a life member of the VFW Post 3772 in Mexico and also was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He worked many years for A. P. Green Refractories and he retired in 1981. He was a Methodist.

Raymond enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Mexico Senior Center. He loved to travel. He traveled extensively with his wife and spent many winters in Arizona.

Survivors include special friend, Margaret Kelsay;one stepson, Louis Franke and wife Bette of Sun City, Ariz; a step-daughter Norma Jean Ohnemus of Cypress, Cal.; one brother, Ernest Powell and wife Mary of Wellsville; one brother-in-law, Jack Brotmarkle of Columbia; two sisters, Mildred Ellis and husband Kermit of New Florence, and Dorothy King of San Diego, Cal.; one sister-in-law, Georgia Powell of Montgomery City; and numerous nieces and nephews and step grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters, five brothers, one step-son and one step-daughter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mexico Senior Center or Missouri Veterans Home Activities Fund. They may be sent in care of Pickering Funeral Home, 403 N. Western, Mexico, MO 65265.
